The Earth is the Lord's

Well, today is a big day. However, it is also just another ordinary day. It is a big day because it is the day the citizens of this wonderful country, established for a time by the LORD, gather together and cast their vote for those who would lead us. This does not happen in every country. It does happen here, thankfully. We consider, we think, we research, we pray, then we vote. It is a part of our Christian vocation as citizens of this nation. Then we continually pray that those new leaders do as the LORD commands, uphold true justice for all life, protect the people and maintain peace. Of course, sometimes in this life we choose poorly. When we do, we pray for forgiveness and trust in God's providence.

That is why it is also an ordinary day. This is not the first election, it will not be the last election, and it is not even the most important election for you. You see, "the earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers." (Psalm 24:1-2) Our Lord, Jesus Christ, is in all and through all and has created and establish all things both heaven and earth. Not one thing happens outside his care and keeping, outside his redemptive plan. He is the LORD, he rules and reigns over all his creation and everything and everyone are his blessed creation. He is just and his steadfast love and faithfulness extend to all.

Yes, the most important election has already happened for those called by his grace into life everlasting, those baptized saints. "Who will ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of his salvation." (Psalm 24:3-5) Yes, the most important election for you came through the Word and the Spirit of God; through the water and the Word of your baptism, by the work of the "God of his salvation." The God of your salvation. In Jesus, our LORD dwelled bodily, working out for you the salvation you so desperately needed--cleans hands, pure hearts and righteousness from God that we could not achieve for ourselves--so that you can stand in Christ in "his holy place." Yes, you have been elected by the grace and mercy of God and that election stands for all time.

So it is a big day. But not as big as we make it to be, that day, the biggest day, has already happened. "Lift up your heads...The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory!" (Psalm 24:10)
